If you enjoy well-paced travel, discovering country roads and places beyond the typical tourist trail, then yes, this tour is likely a great fit for you. It’s designed for curious travellers who appreciate a mix of well-known landmarks and lesser-known gems, including traditional crafts, and scenic countryside.
Bulgaria is home to a rich blend of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Bulgarian heritage.
Highlights include the Rila Monastery, the country’s spiritual heart; the UNESCO-listed Boyana Church near Sofia; and Plovdiv’s Old Town, with its Roman ruins and Revival-era architecture. The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak preserves ancient burial art from the 4th century BCE. Veliko Tarnovo, once a medieval capital, stands out for its dramatic hilltop fortress and rich heritage.
You can see and learn about several traditional Bulgarian crafts, including weaving, embroidery, woodcarving, pottery, metalwork, and traditional breadmaking. Each craft varies by region — Troyan is known for its glazed ceramics, Tryavna for fine woodcarving, and Chiprovtsi and Kotel for intricate woven carpets.
You’ll see many of these traditions in practice at Etara, one of the stops on our tour. Here, artisans shape clay, spin wool, carve wood, and forge metal using the same tools and techniques their ancestors did — offering a hands-on insight into Bulgaria’s cultural heritage.
Visa requirements for both depend on your nationality. Citizens from many countries, including those from the EU, USA, Canada, and Australia, do not require a visa for short stays (up to 90 days) within the Schengen Area, which includes Bulgaria.
