After breakfast, you will enjoy a guided bike tour (~ 2,5 hrs) through the center of Ljubljana.
Since the city core is almost entirely closed to cars, cycling is an easy, stress-free way to cover the main landmarks and get a feel for the layout of the city.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore. You can take the funicular or walk up the hill to the castle for a view of the Alps, or hop on one of the river boats to see the city’s architecture from the canals. The riverside is lined with terraces, so it’s easy to find a spot for a drink and just hang out. If you’re into shopping, the streets around the old town have plenty of local woodwork and salt shops that aren’t the typical “made-in-China” souvenirs.

After breakfast, it is a 45-minute drive to Postojna, where you will explore one of the world’s most significant karst cave systems. The visit begins with an electric train ride that takes you 3.7 kilometers into the caverns, followed by a walking tour through the most impressive halls and formations. Just a few minutes’ drive from the caves is Predjama Castle, a 13th-century fortress built directly into a 120-meter cliff. The castle is famous for its network of secret natural tunnels that once allowed a rebel knight to withstand a year-long siege.
After lunch, you will continue the drive (~ 2hrs) into the heart of the Julian Alps to Lake Bohinj. Bohinj is located within the Triglav National Park and has a rugged, preserved atmosphere.
Overnight in Bohinj.
Accommodation: Hotel Sunrose, Hotel Bohinj, or Similar
Quick Note: The temperature inside Postojna Cave stays a constant 10°C (50°F) year-round, regardless of the weather outside; you will definitely want a jacket even if it’s a hot summer day.
After breakfast, you have a full day to explore Lake Bohinj at your own pace. As the lake is located within the Triglav National Park, the landscape is much more rugged and less developed than nearby Lake Bled. You can walk the 12-kilometer path that circles the entire shoreline, or head to the western end of the lake for a 20-minute hike up to the Savica Waterfall, one of Slovenia’s most famous falls.
If you prefer to be on the water, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard to explore the quieter north shore, which is only accessible by boat or on foot. The water is exceptionally clear and, in the summer months, perfect for a swim at the small pebble beaches near the village of Ukanc. For a broader view of the Julian Alps, the Vogel Cable Car is nearby and takes you up to 1,535 meters, offering a direct view across the lake to Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak.

After breakfast, depart for Soča River (~1.5 hrs), known for its distinct emerald-green color and limestone canyons. Depending on your preference, you can choose between a 3-hour rafting, kayaking, or canyoning excursion. Rafting is the most popular way to see the river’s technical rapids, while canyoning involves more physical activity like sliding down natural rock chutes and jumping into deep pools.
The rest of the day is yours to explore the Soča Valley. The area is a significant historical site from the First World War – visit the Kobarid Museum if you are into military history. Take the opportunity to stop at the viewpoints along the way and perhaps take a short hike to Kozjak Waterfall in the area.

After breakfast, you have the full day to visit Lake Bled, which is a 30-minute drive from Bohinj. Unlike the wilder feel of Lake Bohinj, Bled is centered around its iconic island church and medieval castle perched on a cliff above the water. You can take a traditional Pletna boat – a large, flat-bottomed wooden boat rowed by a local – to reach the island, or rent a small rowing boat to go at your own pace.
For the best views of the lake and the surrounding Alps, we recommend walking up to the Ojstrica or Mala Osojnica viewpoints on the western shore; these are short but steep hikes that avoid the crowds at the castle. If you’re looking for a break, the lakeside promenade is lined with cafes where you can try the local Kremšnita (Bled cream cake), a protected regional specialty.

This morning, you will visit the Vintgar Gorge, located about 4 kilometers north of Lake Bled. The gorge was carved by the Radovna River and features a 1.6-kilometer wooden walkway built directly into the limestone cliffs. The path leads you over rapids and pools, ending at the 13-meter-high Šum Waterfall.
The walk is accessible and relatively flat, but it can get busy, so arriving early is usually best to see the clear turquoise water without the crowds. Afterward, the rest of the day is yours to either return to the quiet of Lake Bohinj or explore the nearby Pokljuka Plateau, a high karst plateau known for its deep spruce forests and traditional shepherd huts.

After breakfast, it is an approximately 3-hour drive to Maribor, Slovenia’s second-largest city. Located in the heart of the Drava Valley, Maribor has a very different character from the Alps, defined by its historic wine culture and Austrian-influenced architecture.
Once you’ve checked in at your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to explore the city center at your own pace. The main squares, like Glavni Trg, are lined with Renaissance-style buildings and local cafes, making it a straightforward city to navigate on foot.
Overnight in Maribor.
Accommodation: Hotel Habakuk, or Similar
After breakfast, it is a short drive to the base of Mariborsko Pohorje, the largest ski and hiking massif in Slovenia. You will take the cable car up the mountain, which reaches an altitude of 1,042 meters. The ride offers a clear view over the city and the Drava Valley, and once at the top, there are several easy, flat walking trails through the pine forests.
Once back down, you will enjoy a lunch at your own choice, and afterwards, you will visit the oldest winerank in Europe, which is located in Maribor and enjoy a wine tasting. Evening is at leisure.

This journey is designed for active travelers who prioritize the freedom of a road trip over the rigid schedule of a traditional group tour. It is particularly suited for those who appreciate a “home base” travel style, allowing you to settle into the Alpine atmosphere for several nights without the constant cycle of packing and moving hotels. If you enjoy being outdoors, this itinerary offers the perfect balance of planned highlights and the autonomy to explore at your own pace.
Short answer: yes. The road network is exceptionally well-maintained, and the driving culture is disciplined, making it a stress-free experience for international visitors. While the highways are fast and efficient, the real beauty of this trip is discovering the country at your own pace; a road trip through the Julian Alps offers some of the most spectacular mountain vistas in Europe, including the hairpin turns of the Vrsic and other mountain passes.
That being said, you must be sure to abide by the local rules and regulations- such as keeping your dipped headlights on 24/7.

May and June are undoubtedly the greenest and most vibrant months, as the spring snowmelt fills the emerald rivers to their peak, making the waterfalls thunder and the Alpine meadows explode with wildflowers. While July and August bring the warmest temperatures, they also host numerous cultural festivals and open-air events across the country. September is a local favorite, offering more moderate, comfortable temperatures that are ideal for long days of hiking and independent exploration.
Visa requirements for both depend on your nationality. Citizens from many countries, including those from the EU, USA, Canada, and Australia, do not require a visa for short stays (up to 90 days) within the Schengen Area, which includes both countries.
While these are the general guidelines, it is essential to confirm the visa requirements with your local authorities, as rules may change. Travellers from certain countries may need to apply for an e-Visa or a traditional visa before arrival.
Please, ensure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. We recommend consulting your local embassy or consulate for the most accurate information.
Our cancellation policy is flexible, and partial refunds may be available. For details, please refer to our Terms and Conditions or download the detailed itinerary. We strongly recommend getting travel insurance for such cases.
