Bulgaria is renowned for producing some of the highest-quality essential oils in the world. Bulgarian oils are prized for their purity and potency, thanks to generations of local producers who have mastered the art of growing crops and distilling oils. Moreover, the distinct, rich aromas of Bulgarian oils result from the country’s unique terroir, which provides favourable conditions for cultivating aromatic plants.
With a long-standing tradition in essential oil production and vast fields of roses and lavender, Bulgaria is renowned as one of the best places to purchase high-quality essential oils. Below, we highlight some of our favorites.
Rosa Damascena: Bulgarian Rose Oil
Among rose varieties, the Rosa Damascena, or Rose of Damascus, is prized for its rich fragrance and is cultivated primarily for its aromatic oils. This rose also holds the highest therapeutic value among roses. Recent genetic studies reveal that the Rose of Damascus is a unique hybrid that no longer grows in the wild. Some historians believe that the Crusader Robert de Brie brought the oil-bearing rose from Syria to Europe in the 13th century.
Rosa Damascena requires around 3,500–5,000 kg of petals to produce just 1 kg of rose oil. The intensive manual labour required to harvest rose petals also contributes to the high cost of rose oil, sometimes exceeding the price of gold.
Therapeutic Uses: Rose oil from Damask Rose is popular for its stress-relieving, mood-enhancing, and anti-aging properties. It’s one of the most important oils in perfumery, being a constituent of some of the most luxurious perfumes, including Chanel No. 5, Midnight Poison, Dior Addict, and Fleurs de Bulgarie, a fragrance created for Queen Victoria in the 19th century.
Rosa Alba Oil
Rosa Alba or White Rose, is a hybrid rose species native to Europe, cultivated since ancient times for its sweet aromatic flowers. It’s thought that Rosa Alba is a hybrid of Rosa Gallica and Rosa Canina. In Bulgaria, it’s widely grown in the Rose Valley for rose oil production. Rosa Alba essential oil has a lighter, more delicate floral aroma and is prized for its uplifting properties for both mind and body.
Rosa Alba oil is more expensive than other rose oils because this species contains less oil, requiring nearly twice as many petals to produce 1 kg of oil. It requires nearly double the amount of petals to produce the same amount of oil — an impressive 7,000–10,000 kg for just 1 kg of rose oil. This rarity and labor-intensive production make Rosa Alba oil particularly prized and costly.
Therapeutic Uses: This fragrant oil is widely used in cosmetics, including creams, lotions, bath and body oils, and natural perfumery, known for its mild antiviral and antibacterial properties. Rosa Alba oil is also known to reduce skin redness and inflammation and is believed to be especially beneficial for supporting female reproductive health.
Geranium Oil
Geranium oil comes from a species native to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. The oil is extracted through steam distillation of the stems and leaves of Pelargonium graveolens. and is used in aromatherapy for its many health benefits.
In Ancient Egypt it was used to promote beautiful, radiant skin while today, geranium oil is used to treat acne, reduce inflammation, alleviate anxiety, and balance hormones. The oil has a sweet and delicate rose-like aroma and is known to relieve stress and balance hormones.
Therapeutic Uses: Thanks to its powerful cicatrisant properties, geranium oil increases blood circulation just below the skin’s surface, aiding in the healing of spots caused by acne, cuts, wounds, or surgical incisions. Geranium oil also has the power to minimise wrinkles by tightening facial skin, and recent studies have shown its effects in suppressing Candida cell growth in mice. As a circulatory oil, it exits the body through perspiration, and its rose-like scent provides a pleasant freshness throughout the day.
Lavender Oil
The name Lavender comes from the Latin lavare, meaning “to wash.” In Bulgaria, lavender is cultivated to produce high-quality essential oil, known for its high linalool content (up to 2.6%) and low camphor levels. In recent years, Bulgaria has become one of the world’s leading producers of lavender oil. Lavender oil’s antimicrobial properties have been valued for centuries, used to prevent infections and combat bacterial and fungal issues. Nearly 100 studies confirm its diverse benefits, establishing pure lavender oil as a powerful yet gentle addition to health and wellness practices.
Therapeutic Uses: Traditionally, lavender oil has been used in perfumes, aromatherapy, and a range of health applications. It repels insects, induces sleep, relieves stress, treats acne, improves respiratory issues, boosts immunity, and promotes digestion, making it a household favourite for its extensive health benefits. Its gentle yet powerful nature makes it ideal for a wide range of therapeutic and personal care uses.
Helichrysum (Immortelle) Oil
The genus Helichrysum includes more than 500 species spread across the Mediterranean, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Commonly called “everlasting” or “immortal,” Helichrysum flowers retain their beautiful yellow colour long after drying. The name comes from the Greek words for sun (helios) and gold (chrysos). According to some sources, these flowers were once offered to the Greek gods.
Helichrysum oil is a staple in Mediterranean traditional medicine, and its popularity is now spreading globally. It takes one ton of flowering tops to produce less than 2 liters of essential oil, yielding only about 0.2%. Recent research has focused on the oil’s pharmacological potential, examining drug interactions, safety, and the science behind its traditional uses.
Therapeutic Uses: Helichrysum oil is celebrated for its skin-regenerative properties, which help prevent skin aging, making it a valued ingredient in anti-aging creams and cosmetics. Studies have found that the oil’s flavonoids and terpenes can inhibit bacterial and fungal growth, supporting wound healing and reducing infections. Its anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant properties make it a versatile choice for skincare and wellness. Helichrysum oil is also known to relieve sunburn, support liver detoxification, boost immunity, and may assist with kidney health.
